CHAPTER

SEVENTEEN

BONES

Riley seems to be doing alright. I hope it stays that way. The sight of her hurting pains me.

Fuck. When did I become such a pussy?

I need to get my head on straight before I make my way over to the clubhouse to get this shit sorted. I doubt Riley is going to want to stay at Gauge’s parents’ house.

I want to know why those fuckers specifically went after us. They didn’t attack River or Koda. My mind is going a million miles-a-second. I need to calm down and sort through my thoughts about my brother. He’s the calmer one between us.

“Bones, my head feels like it’s going to explode. I don’t want to worry River,” Riley whispers, leaning into me.

Her body fits nicely against mine. I lightly run my hand up and down her back.

“Once we know everything is going to be okay, I’ll have Dagger give you some painkillers and antibiotics to make sure you don’t get an infection. Then, I’m going to take you to Gauge’s parents’ house. Jazzy is a nurse. She’ll help nurse you back to health.”

“Jazzy is nice. I’ve met her at the hospital before.”

She yawns and closes her bloodshot eyes.

“Little Dove, you can’t go to sleep yet.” I gently shake her shoulder, not wanting to jostle her.

“I know, but the streetlights are making my head pound worse than it already is.”

She lightly touches the wound. It took seventeen stitches to close it. She’s going to have a nasty scar on her forehead, which doesn’t bother me. It means she’s lived through some shit.

Several minutes later, we arrive at Dagger’s clinic.

River pulls the car into the nearest parking space.

“How do you know Gauge’s mom?”

“I’ll tell you about that once my head doesn’t feel like it’s gonna explode.”

The door swings open.

Dagger peeks inside. “Do you want me to carry her?”

“Nah, I’ve got her. Thank you, though, brother.”

I carefully slip out of the SUV and carefully pull Riley out of the car. I don’t want her injured more than she already is.

“Okay. I’ll lead the way to CT then.” Dagger glances at me from the corner of his eye and walks ahead of us.

He knows I’ve feelings for Riley. He’s also aware of Koda’s feelings for River.

Normally, I’d fuck a woman and tell her to get lost, not caring if they’d gotten off or not. If they want to get off, they can ask one of the other guys. It’s a dickish move, but I don’t care. I’ve never wanted anyone to get close to me. Anyone I care about that gets too close ends up dying. My sisters, my father—they’d been killed, and I can’t ever get them back.

River and Koda slowly trail behind us. They’re whispering amongst themselves.

River blames herself for what happened to Riley. I’ll have Gauge talk to her. He has a way with words.

I used to feel the same way about my little sister’s death. My mom would often let Lyra and me go out in the front yard to play basketball.
